Parallax View Single Of The Week

While it's conceivably true that You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve by Johnny Boy deserves SOTW on the basis of its title alone, the full-on chorus and indiepop-meets-Northern-Soul-in-a-motorway-layby-orgy production certainly seal the deal. Throw in some firework sound effects, church bells and many ecstatic 'yeah yeahs' and it's possibly the most demented pop record produced in Britain since Roy Wood and Wizzard wished it would be Xmas every day. Semi-official health warning, though: 7 out of 10 GPs advise that this record will stop making any sense whatsoever come the end of the school holidays. Nevertheless, Parallax View does nothing if not live for the moment, so Single Of The Week it is. Imelda Marcos, don't argue!

Meanwhile, given that sounding like Interpol was so last winter why did The Departure lounge about until August to announce their, um, arrival, with debut single All Mapped Out? PV quite enjoy the record, particularly the bit towards the end when the guitars threaten to lurch from angular to baggy in an impressive feat of genre-bending gymnastics, but refrain from awarding them joint SOTW on the basis that sounding like Franz Ferdinand refracted through a mockney prism really shouldn't be encouraged.
