Monica AliBricking it

Gosh. Is it time already for the 'new Zadie Smith'? Seems so, if you believe the hype surrounding Brick Lane the debut novel from Monica Ali (pictured right) which was finally published today by Doubleday some months after she was included in Granta's 20 Best Young Writers list.

Despite a feeling that all this expectation could lead to a cool critical reception, the reviews have been gushing. Take for example this one from The Sunday Times which could be paraphrased thus: 'It's like Dickens! But with black people! Brilliant!'. This Observer piece is more thoughtful and includes an interview with the alluring writer which gives a better flavour of her qualities as a writer and a person.

I'll probably buy the book, whether or not I stop drooling over her inlay picture enough to actually read the thing is another matter. Am I being grossly unfair to suggest the time may be soon when no multi-ethnic hottie's life will be complete without that ultimate fashion accessory - the acclaimed debut novel? Dear Robyn it really is time to get your skates on.

And while we're soaking up a bit of kulchur time to let you know that the continually impressive The Minor Fall The Major Lift has moved to a new address.
