Backchat Special - Elvish Livs!
I've had a quick response to my request for info on whether or not Liv Tyler was overdubbed for her role in the first Lord of The Rings movie. Which is kinda odd since according to my stats very few of you ever visit here when it's not on your employer's time. Nevertheless, hardcore Parallax Viewer Jordan weighs in with this opinion -
'What you should have watched was the extended edition DVD, it's split over 2 discs and lasts about 3 1/2 hours. Liv Tyler has an extra 10 minutes or so and the love story is explained a bit better...[she] does look dubbed over in some parts, but with the attention to detail shown in the rest of the film, I'd be surprised if it wasn't intentional. Arwen is meant to sound all mythical and liker her voice is 'carried on the wind' anyway so they probably just echoed her track.'
Further leaping to Liv's defence is the inimitable Robyn Wilder who reckons -
'It actually was all her; her voice sounds deeper because -- well -- you use different vocal muscles depending on which accent you're using (when I had an American accent my voice was a lot higher, for example)...it is an excellent film, though -- and the extra 30 minutes on the 4-dics DVD version really flesh out the characters and the plot to make it an even better film, if possible.'
Hmm. So nobody's yet come up with the theory that her acting was so bad she had to be overdubbed. How disappointing. Never mind then, I'll have to make do with thinking about all those different muscles Robyn might be using right now instead.
