Matthew Jay RIP: NAM veteran kills himselfFuck The Pane Away

Although I haven't been able to find any corroborating evidence, the normally reliable No Rock 'n' Roll Fun (via ChaChaCha) delivers the desperately sad news that singer/songwriter Matthew Jay has committed suicide. He threw himself out of a window, apparently: which certainly makes a difference from overdosing on drugs or taking a midnight swim when loaded. At the peak of the media frenzy concerning the New Acoustic Movement (N.A.M.) Matthew got himself a record deal before he even performed his first gig, but was dropped by his label in April of this year due to the not inconsiderable feat of selling less records than Ed Harcourt.

I bought a single by Matthew Jay once, a bargain bin 99p 7" if I remember rightly. I can't remember the title of it, and certainly couldn't whistle the tune, but it wasn't bad at all. Certainly not bad enough to kill yourself over, anyway. Our thoughts, as always, are with Matthew's friends and family, and the other 749 people whose lives were somehow touched by his records.
