Went out last night to The Little Civic to see that Martina Topley-Bird. It turned into a bit of a hazy evening as I spent much of the evening in thrall to one of her cute backing singers (complete with fetching crutch). The show started with an unusual a cappela song where the singing was so pitch perfect there were a few murmurs amongst the crowd as to whether some of it was pre-recorded (my legal team have reminded me to add that this is extremely doubtful).

As I'm not familiar with the album I don't intend to discuss the material in depth but there was an accessible blend of dark, rhythmic sub-Tricky songs with lighter, more commercial fare which could see her win some of the Macy Gray dollar. The live show was slick and enjoyable enough, and Martina displayed the charisma and larynx one would have expected plus enough of a sprinkling of the old Maxinquaye voodoo to keep the dope fiends happy. I guess it's a fine line between a calculated formula and falling between two stools and it'll be fascinating to watch how her career will pan out...
