Well it was another lively weekend of soccer action as the FA Cup 3rd Round recaptured the media's attention, with the two most local league sides to yours truly, Wolves and Shrewsbury, putting aside indifferent spells to inflict humiliating defeats on Premiership high fliers Newcastle and Everton respectively. But perhaps the biggest shock of all was my own team West Ham - winning at home for the first time this season with a jammy hard-earned victory against Nottm. Forest. Hope it gives the side some much-needed confidence for next week against a certain Newcastle backlash as the Geordie's boss Bobby Robson seemed furious that some of his side couldn't be bothered in their defeat against Wolves. The attitude of Craig Bellamy, who apparently gestured towards his Premiership badge and shouted something to the effect of 'The Premiership! That's all that matters!' at the Wolves crowd, seemed to typify his team's unjustified arrogance.
Only marginally less appalling than Bellamy's attitude was the Tottscum performance in their dismal 4-0 drubbing at Gordon Strachan's Southampton. Their defending owed a lot more to St. Trinians than St. Mary's - but then again, at least it proved there is still room for a great bit of comedy on Saturday night telly. You have to feel sorry for Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle though, he must have been a really terribly over-rated ninny of a player in a past life to deserve such a display. And it's such a pity that the 'extra yard' in Teddy Sheringham's brain appears to have been infected by early-onset CJD.
I'm not sure how I feel about the prospect of Lee Bowyer joining the Hammers. I've never really liked the guy and I'd have been quite happy to put him down with all the other mad dogs in the past. Nevertheless, if the greedy git agrees to our terms at least he'll be adding three dimensions - ability to tackle, ability to score goals, and the ability to be uglier than Steffen Freund, that have been hitherto absent from our midfield this season. Only time will tell.
