In Rod Liddle's entertaining piece on celebs behaving badly this morning he asked the reasonable question 'in what way did [Angus] Deayton's behaviour affect his ability to present Have I Got News for You?'

And yet this evening it has been announced that Angus Deayton has indeed been sacked as presenter of the show. I can't for the life of me see why. 'Have I Got News For You?' is a post-watershed near-the-knuckle satirical news quiz, and I'm sure the scandals of his private life will have improved ratings if anything.

Besides which, if the BBC decided to clear its hallowed corridors of anyone who's ever been within snorting distance of Bolivia's finest export, would there be anyone left to turn off the lights?
