Finally managed to persuade someone to go see Insomnia with me (thanks, Michele) and one of the problems with watching a film that's been out a few weeks is that it was near enough an hour in before it got to a plot development I wasn't aware of from reading reviews. I really do wish critics would discipline themselves more when it comes to plot spoilers (Cosmo Landesmen's review of The Road To Perdition in yesterday's Sunday Times was particularly culpable, so I'm not going to link to it, just in case you're tempted to read).
So all I'm going to say about Insomnia is it's based on a well-regarded Norwegian film from a few years ago, is directed by the guy who made Memento and stars Al Pacino as a troubled detective drafted into a murder investigation in Alaska, only it gets a lot more complicated than that. It's the best I've seen at the flicks since Minority Report and it's encouraging that such a thoughtful, provocative, ambiguous thriller can be released with some success during the blockbuster box-office period.
Michele wasn't so impressed though. She was disappointed there weren't more dead people. I worry about the company I keep sometimes.
