Things going less than swimmingly in The Deep EndMore spontaneous cinerama tonight as I popped out to see The Deep End a taut and atmospheric thriller featuring the excellent Tilda Swinton as a mother of three who goes to extraordinary lengths to protect her eldest son when his dead lover washes up ashore the morning after a late-night argument. There's also a notable performance from Goran Visnjic (a new name to me, but apparently he plays a 'dishy doc' in ER) as a gambling bum involved in a plot to blackmail her.

It's one of those films best enjoyed the least you know about the plot, but there's a standout scene in the middle of the movie, where a fairly hackneyed piece of blackmail dialogue ('You've got to try harder') is turned on its head, and from thereon in The Deep End veers from so-so thriller into more intriguing psychological territory. If you're looking for a serious film that concentrates on plot, milieu and epiphany at the expense of one-liners and car chases, this one's definitely worth a look.
