Congratulations are due to West Ham players David James and Joe Cole on their inclusion in Sven Goran Eriksson's 23-man England squad for the 2002 World Cup. Commiserations to Trevor Sinclair on narrowly missing out despite his versatility, although to be fair he didn't really do himself justice in the recent friendly games. The two 'surprise' inclusions, Cole and Arsenal's veteran central defender Martin Keown, are both correct decisions in my view. Despite his age, Keown is simply one of the best defenders available for selection, while Cole is the only one of the fringe midfielders who could come on at a late stage in the game and genuinely turn a match.
