Storytelling: fiction pulped I caught Todd Solondz's Storytelling on DVD earlier this week, courtesy of movietrak. I guess by now people pretty much know that this follow-up to Happiness is basically two stories in one, entitled Fiction and Non-Fiction.

In Fiction the action starts with Selma Blair. Selma Blair with pink hair. Selma Blair with pink hair, naked. Selma Blair with pink hair, naked having wild sex. Selma Blair with pink hair, naked having wild sex with a boy with cerebral palsy. Predictably, things kinda go downhill from there, but in which film wouldn't they?

Non-Fiction is (perhaps suitably) a more subtle and realistic comedy than its predecessor, focussing on a director suffering a mid-life crisis who is making a documentary on a dysfunctional family.

This part of the film is clever and well-observed with some good performances, much nearer the quality level of Happiness but the bottom line is that for a comedy it just didn't make me laugh often enough.

Some nice songs from Belle & Sebastian on the soundtrack though.
