Sumday: All This Could Be YoursSumday, the new Grandaddy album may not quite have the peaks of its predecessor The Sophtware Slump, but on the whole it's a more consistently satisfying album with the quality of choonage steadily improving as the record progresses. Track 10, 'OK With My Decay', has already become my official anthem with it's chorus 'I'm OK/With My Decay/I Have No Choice/I Have No Voice' set to a beautiful melody.

[If you only buy one new record this week, I'd put Sumday way ahead of the latest Radiohead. And you're not seriously thinking about buying a Metallica record, are you?]

The Grandaddy live experience however, left more to be desired than their fine new album. Sonically they hit the groove more often than not, it's always a thrill to hear that keyboard motif from AM180 in the flesh, and Lost On Yer Merry Way from the new record was another highlight of the show.

But what annoyed me a little on the night was the way the band made scant effort to interact with the crowd, relying instead on a constant loop of 10cc's 'I'm Not In Love' inbetween songs (great: the most overplayed record in British radio history, cheers guys!). They've never exactly been convivial performers in the past and it's true that they're mainly used to support slots outside the UK, but in a fairly intimate venue like Academy 2 they came over as not so much eccentric and difficult, but just plain ignorant.

I hope they continue to make brilliant records but from now on I'll be skipping on future live experiences in favour of artists like Cave and Springsteen who don't consider themselves too big to relate to their audiences.
